Electric vehicles
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, with many people looking to ditch their gas-powered vehicles. In addition to being environmentally friendly, electric vehicles also offer a number of benefits. If you’re interested in learning more about this technology or purchasing an EV, Myers Electric can provide you with all the information you need.
Benefits of EVs
Zero emissions
Government grants may be offered and EVs may be eligible for tax benefits or subsidies
Electric vehicles are silent due to the absence of moving parts
Electric vehicles have quick acceleration due to the high torque available from the get-go
Low maintenance and less frequent service intervals
Low running costs
You can charge electric cars at home and leave with 100% available range
Lower cost per mile compared to gasoline powered cars
Federal government incentives
The Government of Canada offers incentives up to $5,000 for consumers who buy or lease an EV.
Ontario Rebates
Ontario drivers can access two incentives offered by the non-profit group Plug’n Drive:
- The Used EV Incentive Program provides $1,000 toward the purchase of a used fully electric car.
- The Scrappage Incentive Program offers $1,000 toward the purchase of a used fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric car when you scrap your old gas-powered car.
Quebec Rebates
Residents of Quebec may be eligible for rebates of up to $8,000 on EVs under $60,000.
Types of electric vehicles
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV/EV)
- Electric cars are vehicles that use electric power to move. They are not fueled by gasoline, and they rely on an electric motor and battery to get them going. These cars are a cost-effective option compared to other types of EVs, especially when you compare the price of the car itself with the cost of electricity over time.
- Electric cars are less expensive to charge and maintain than gas cars, and they don't require any of the extra maintenance that gas cars do. This makes them a much cheaper option over the long run.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
- Plug-in hybrid vehicles have all of the same components as hybrid vehicles, but the batteries are larger and can be recharged by plugging in.
- Plug-in hybrids offer drivers a range of up to 80 km on electric power alone, with the ability to switch over to gasoline engines or generators for longer trips. Once the battery is depleted, the car will operate as a regular hybrid until it runs out of gas.
- Plug-in hybrids are more affordable to drive than traditional Hybrids because they provide all-electric driving for most day to day needs, while still offering equal or better fuel economy when operating in gasoline mode.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV/Hybrid)
- Hybrids, which are a type of electric car, first became popular in the 1990s. Today, you're unlikely to find a non-hybrid version of any model on the market.
- Hybrids have a gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a small battery pack. The battery is rechargeable through 'regenerative braking.' When the vehicle comes to a stop, the electric motor switches on and when it first accelerates, the gasoline engine takes over. This way, hybrids let the electric motor and gasoline engine work together to improve your efficiency and reduce your fuel costs.
- Hybrids are not just powered by gasoline, like traditional gas cars. They deliver better fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs than traditional gas cars, but they are still mainly powered by gasoline. As a result, hybrids often do not come up in conversations surrounding electric vehicles.
